Hot Crab Rangoon Dip

Our latest food obsessions currently is this Hot Crab Rangoon Dip. Let’s be honest…can you blame us?

Inspired by the popular Chinese appetizer Crab Rangoon or Cream Cheese Wontons, crab rangoon dip is everything we love about our favorite rangoon in a hot and bubbly dip! Perfect to sink your favorite crackers into!

Made with cream cheeseimitation crab meatgreen onions, and seasonings, this Crab Rangoon Dip recipe calls for just a few ingredients and a short 10-minute prep time; and then the oven does the rest of the work!

You can also top this lovely baked crab rangoon dip with Thai sweet chili sauce upon serving to bring a hint of sweetness to it. I got this idea because I always have to have sweet chili sauce as a dip when I make my air fryer crab rangoon and baked cream cheese wontons recipes.

Yep, it’s basically a hot crab dip with an Asian twist!

In addition to crackers, I love serving crab rangoon dip with veggie sticks such as carrots and celery, or fried wonton chips (air fry or bake wonton wrappers cut into strips), or tortilla chips.

Crab Rangoon Dip makes a delicious dip for watch parties, appetizers, or snack. I cannot help but grab a bite or two whenever it is around because it is just irrisistible!

Ingredients

Get ready to transform simple ingredients into a dazzling dish of delicious crab rangoon dip:

  • cream cheese – the base of this dip that brings creaminess to it. Let it sit in room temperature or microwave briefly to soften before using.
  • sour cream – adds rich creamy texture and a tangy depth of flavor to the dip.
  • mozzarella cheese – a mild and gooey cheese that helps thicken grab dip. Cheddar, Monterey Jack, or other soft cheese can be used as well.
  • imitation crab meat – shredded crab meat that is made of fish that has a similar flavor and texture to real crab. This is a much more economical form of crab meat than real crab and works well in these dishes. Real crab or lump crab meat (so good!!!) can be used in this dip instead if preferred.
  • green onions – also called scallions, these bring a slight crisp texture and subtle onion flavor to grab rangoon dip.
  • granulated sugar
  • salt
  • sweet chili sauce (optional) – this is a condiment made with red chilies, sugar, and vinegar, it offers a spicy and sweet punch to contrast the creamy richness of the dip.

How to make Crabs rangoon dip

This Crab rangoon dip recipe takes only requires only 10 minutes of active time before it goes into the oven to be baked and cooked into a bubbly cheesy perfection

Prepare the Ingredients

First, let cream cheese come to room temperature, or microwave it to soften it. This will make mixing the ingredients easier and ensures a smooth texture.

Small dices green onions and chop imitation crab meat into smaller pieces. Using a larger knife will make chopping and cutting so much easier!

Combine

Combine cream cheese, sour cream, chopped crab meat, shredded cheese, minced garlic, diced green onions, sugar, and salt in a large mixing bowl.

Mix well using a spatula or electric mixer to get a creamy consistency throughout the mixture.

Bake

Once the crab rangoon dip mixture is well incorporated, transfer to a greased platter or baking dish.

Send mixture into the (350℉ pre-heated) oven and bake for 20-25 minutes.

When it’s done crab rangoon dip should be hot and bubbly.

If you like a browned top, once it’s done baking, turn oven to top heat and broil grab rangoon dip for another 2-4 minutes.

Broil time may vary depending on your oven so keep an eye on it.

Serve

Crab rangoon dip is served best warm and straight out of the oven. Sprinkle with more chopped green onions as garnish then top with a thin layer of sweet chili sauce or any sweet/spicy glaze (if you wish).

Sweet glaze or sweet chili sauce isn’t entirely necessary. Crab rangoon dip will still be delicious even without it!

Serving Suggestions

Crab Rangoon Dip pairs beautifully with a variety of dippers! Here are a few of my favorites:

  • Crackers – the buttery, crisp texture complements the dip perfectly.
  • Veggie Sticks – a fresh alternative, use carrots, celery, or bell pepper sticks for a lighter option.
  • Fried Wonton Chips – the closest to the traditional crab rangoons! Cut wonton wrappers into strips, brush with cooking oil on both sides, and air fry it in the air fryer until they are cirspy!
  • Tortilla Chips – this crispy chip is perfect for dipping!
  • Pita Chips – their sturdy nature stands up well to this creamy dip.
  • Bagel Chips – for those who prefer a denser bite, bagel chips add a chewy contrast.

Variations and Substitutions

Flexibility is key in the kitchen, and this recipe is open to various adaptations to suit your taste buds or pantry availability:

  • Cheese variety – use any other soft cheeses such as Monterey Jack cheese, mild cheddar etc. You can also add parmesan for an added bite!
  • Substitute real crab meat – while using real crab instead of imitation crab will elevate the dish, offering a more authentic taste (and a more expensive price tag! 😉 ).
  • Alternative toppings – experiment with different sauces like hot, spicy glazes or even sriracha for a unique finish.
  • Different seasonings – Chinese 5 spice, soy sauce or Worcestershire sauce work well in the basic crab rangoon mix too, bringing a added burst of brightness to the dip.

Tips and Tricks

  • Enhance Flavor with Spices: Add a dash of extra flavors such as soy sauce or Worcestershire sauce to liven up the taste of the crab mix. You can also add some Chinese 5 spice or any other spices to enhance the flavor.
  • Cheese Choices: While mozzarella is used in this recipe, you can mix and match cheeses like cheddar or parmesan for more depth and complexity in flavor.
  • Opt For Fresh Ingredients: Although you can use pre-minced garlic for convenience, fresh garlic will bring a more robust flavor to the crab rangoon dip.
  • Baking Dish Type: Use a shallow baking dish to ensure even cooking and a nice, slightly browned top layer on your crab dip.
  • Experiment With Toppings: While sweet chili sauce is delicious, other topping options such as hot sauce, Sriracha, or even jalapeño slices can bring a new dimension to your dip.
  • Reheat Gently: When reheating leftovers, do so gently using the oven to prevent the crab rangoon dip from drying out or losing its rich creamy flavor.

Here’s to creating a rich and flavorful crab rangoon dip that is sure to wow your guests! Enjoy and happy dipping! 🥂
