I’m the founder, creator, and voice behind Joyous Apron. I’m so glad you are here!
I specialized in delicious, exciting recipes that are also approachable for the everyday cook. I believe in using fresh and quality ingredients, and meticulously testing my recipes so that you will have success when you make them. I’m also a food photographer – my goal is to make sure my recipes look as good on screen as they taste in real life!
I started my food blog Joyous Apron in 2018 because I love food and love sharing recipes, and today my recipes reach millions of people every year. I was highlighted as a creator at SurLa Table for Asian American Pacific Islander Month and my recipes have been featured on Yahoo, Buzzfeed, MSN, Tasty, SheKnows, Pioneer Women, Parade, PureWow, and much more.

About Joyous Apron
Joyous Apron is a food blog for foodies. It’s for real, normal people like you and me who enjoy good food and want to make delicious food at home. I truly believe everybody can cook!
The heart behind Joyous Apron is simple: I want to help arm you with everything you need to make food you will truly love.
What you should know about my recipes:
- I create recipes using good-quality and fresh ingredients, because it makes a difference! This doesn’t mean it has to be obscure, expensive, or complicated. In other words, it just means we put in good stuff so that the product is also…good stuff.
- All recipes shared are ones I think are delicious and have enjoyed, tested, and tried (multiple times). I’m highly dedicated to testing (and retesting) my recipes and sharing what I’ve learned along the way so that you can confidently rely on them. Every recipe is tested many times before it lands on the website. If I’m not 1000% satisfied and proud of the recipe, it will not be here.
- I don’t sacrifice taste. If it’s healthy it happens to be healthy. But at the same time, I can think of so many healthy foods and ingredients that I love. Hello, avocados!
- I try to share everything I know and learned along the way to ensure your success! In addition to hundreds of recipes on this site, you will also find lots of helpful cooking and kitchen tips, step-by-step photographs, helpful tools, unhelpful tools, brands I love, ingredients to use (or not to use), substitution tricks, frequently asked questions, helpful shortcuts, mistakes I’ve made, and much more.

Culinary Expertise and Journey
I’ve been cooking for almost 30 years — mostly self-taught, learned through trial, error, and a whole lot of recipes that didn’t work the first time (or the second, or the third 😅).
I’ve picked up solid culinary techniques over the years — from knife skills to flavor-building. I’m also a learner at heart – I am constantly exposing myself to new culinary experiences and learning new cooking techniques, then finding ways to translate all that to approachable cooking. I want to always provide you with fresh and exciting recipes. And also, let’s be real – I’ll do that just for myself because that’s my passion. ☺️
I created Joyous Apron in 2018 when I decided to take a chance on starting my own business and launching my food blog.
At that time, I was a marketing professional and spent the last decade working in the corporate world. I knew it was time to switch course and do what I was truly passionate about – creating recipes and sharing food with others.
I love food and have been cooking since I was a teenager growing up in Penang, Malaysia. I came from a heavy food culture and a family of cooking and food enthusiasts. My grandmother and aunts from both sides of the family are incredible cooks and I grew up learning from them and eating good food all the time. We take our food very seriously.
When I was 19, I moved to the United States for college. I have since lived in many cities in different parts of the country, travelled for work and pleasure, and had the chance to be exposed to a variety of cuisine and culinary methods.
Just like my experience, on this blog you will see a little bit of everything, and you will notice the influence of my upbringing and experience in the foods I create and write about.

Let’s get Personal
I live with my best friend and better half in the Austin, TX area, and we have been married for 10+ years. John is my guinea pig for all recipes, 24/7 business consultant, and biggest cheerleader.
I love the ocean, fine wine, and engaging conversations. If I had all the money and free time in the world I would travel and explore the ends of the Earth. On business class, preferably. 🙂
Life is short – I am constantly learning to see beauty, forgive quickly, serve others, and most importantly, find rest, satisfaction, and joy in Jesus in all that I do.
